- 1StressIntensity of loading on member.
Cause of deformation.
Stress = load/area experiencing load
Measured in kN/m2 or kN/mm2 - 2StrainChange in shape of member under load.
= Change in dimension/original unloaded dimension
Directly related to strain. Modulus of elasticity. - 3Shear forceTendency of member to shear at cross section.
Sum of all loads and supporting reactions on one side of the beam.
Unit = kN or N - 4StabilityAbility of a structural system to remain in equilibrium under loading, steady and in position.
- 5Angle of reposeAngle of slope to which loose particles can be formed when piled through friction.
Sand = angle of repose 30 degrees
Gravel = angle of repose 40 degrees - 6AxialApplication of forces in line with common axis, usually centre of gravity.
Axially loaded = line of action follows centre of column
Means the same as CONCENTRIC - 7BendingDeformation under transverse load causing member to deflect to curve.
Resultant bending stress is combination of compression and tension. - 8Bending momentTendency of member to bend at cross section.
Algebraic sum of moments about section on one side of member.
Unit = kNm or kNmm - 9Centre of gravityPoint on body that resultant gravitational force always acts.
Body has 1 CoG in any plane or axis.
For symmetrical bodies it is at geometrical centre.
For non-symmetrical bodies it is found by calculating moments and equating the resultant moment to sum of moments of all constituent parts. - 10CompressionPushing force that results in shrinking, contracting or shortening of member.
Compression members = struts between ends of members to resist 'thrust' - 11Concentric'having a common centre'
Application of forces with line of action passing through CoG of member. - 12Degree of freedomAmount of restraint applied to members connected at a joint and their ability to move.
Fully fixed, partial (hinged or horizontal), full freedom. - 13Eccentricity'not having common centre'
Force applied and line of action does not pass through CoG.
Opposite of concentric or axial.
