Knowledge Application of information (to a given context) resulting in understanding
Application using information within a given context
Data type Defines the type of information that can be stored. For example, dates, numbers or characters
Static data Data that stay the same after a refresh
Dynamic data Data that can (but does not have to) change after a refresh
Direct No one or thing comes between the source of the data and yourself when collecting the data
Indirect Something come between yourself and the data collection. It might be bought, another person collects it or it is collected for a different purpose
Quality of information How useful that information is in the target area for which it has been produced. How easy it is to turn it into the required knowledge
Encoding Transforming the data from one format into another. Can include shortening, symbol replacement or abbreviations
Range Difference between upper and lower value
Type Data type must match
Presence Data must be entered
Length Maximum and minimum characters entered
Picture Follow predefined rules for each data type at each position
Check digit Mathematically calculated check
External media Media that can be removed. For example, USB memory stick, external hard disk drive and internet back up
Hardware A physical device, something that can be touched and seen
Software Programs and code - cannot be physically seen or touched; only the results of running the software can be seen
Consumables Paper, ink, toner, electricity
Personnel hiring, training and time
Input Getting data external to the system into the system
Processing Performing an action on the data. For example, edit, sort, save etc
Output Getting data that is in the system out of the system
Storage Saving data for later use
Feedback Taking the output and making it into the next cycle of input
