What is the Dakar Rally race? The Dakar is a rally raid. It consists of one stage per day comprising at least one "special" each (several hundred kilometres long), on- or off-road.
Why is it called Dakar Rally? The Dakar Rally was launched in 1978 by a young and adventurous Frenchmen named Thierry Sabine. In its early years, the race was called the Paris-Dakar Rally because it started in the French capital of Paris and ended in Dakar, the capital of Senegal.
How long does it take to complete the Dakar rally? The total distance covered is several thousand kilometres. The event takes place over a period of ten to fifteen days (versus two to three days for cross-country rallies).
Where does Dakar Rally takes place? The 2022 edition of the Dakar Rally takes place in Saudi Arabia for the third consecutive year. Crews set off from the city of Ha'il on January 2, with a traditional rest day on January 8 in the city of Riyadh, before the route heads to Jeddah for the finish on January 14.
Why is Dakar Rally not in Africa? Most events since the inception in 1978 were staged from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal, but due to security threats in Mauritania, which led to the cancellation of the 2008 rally, events from 2009 to 2019 were held in South America. Since 2020, the race has been entirely in Saudi Arabia.
Can anyone enter the Dakar rally? Everyone can enter the Dakar; the only condition is to be at least 18-years of age. You do not need to be a rally-raid champion to take part. The goal of the Dakar is to have both professionals and amateurs participating in the same rally and on the same route.
How do they navigate in the Dakar Rally? There is usually no arrow pointing to a waypoint ahead. So, you navigate using three sources of information: ICO for kilometers, GPS for CAP heading, and Roadbook for instructions. In certain circumstances, the GPS will show an arrow directing you to the next waypoint.
Which vehicles take part in the Dakar rally? The Dakar features five categories of vehicles. Motorbikes, quads, cars (T1/T2), lightweight vehicles (T3/T4) and trucks (T5)
What is Malle Moto? Malle Moto, French for 'Trunk Motorbike', is a category in which riders of motorcycles and quads are almost completely unassisted. This category often goes under the radar because there's just such few riders who want to take on the added challenge.
Which car has won the most Dakar Rally? The most wins of the Dakar rally car category is 12 by Mitsubishi (Japan) between 1985 and 2007.
