Cards in this deck (32)
- 1What is WHMISWork Place Hazardous Materials Information System
- 2What is the purpose of whmisIt gives people info on how to handle materials safely
- 3Whmis symbols

- 4What do they meanExplosive it is for materials that have explosion or reactivity hazards
Flame for fire hazards
Gas cylinder for gases under pressure
Health hazard for may cause serious health problems
Corrosive for materials that may cause damage to metal, skin, and eyes
Exclamation mark may cause affect health and ozone damage
Oxidizer for oxidizing hazards
Skull and crossbones may cause death/toxity if people are exposed to it for short periods of time or amounts
Enviroment may cause damage to aquatic life
Biohazardous organism or toxins may cause serious diseases to befall people or animals health - 5What is MSDS and why MSDSMSDS stands for material safety data sheet is to provide information on the hazards of working with a chemical and procedures that should be used to ensure safety
- 6Physical propertiesPhysical is visible features such as color, density, boiling, and smell

- 7Chemical propertiesDescribe how substances react with other substances ex:paper burns near fire

- 8Physical vs chemical changesPhysical changes alter appearance of substance but does not make it another substance reversible ex:tearing paper, melting paper
Chemical changes change in matter which produce a new substance - 9Signs of chemical changebubbles appear
precipitate forms
Color change
Heat and/or light is emitted
reaction is not easily reversed
Energy is always involved in changes - 10Classifications of matterMatter is organised as a mixture or a pure substance
Pure substance made of a single kind of matter
2 types elements and compounds - 11Pure substancesElements made of one atom can't be broken down anymore example:H,O
Substances made of two or more different atoms can be broken down by chemicals
Example H2O - 12MixturesCombination of two or more pure substances
2 types homogeneous and heterogeneous - 13HomogenousMade of solvent(does dissolving)and solute (substance that gets dissolved)
Solute + solvent appear to be one salt water,a mixture of paints,Coca cola - 14HeterogenousIndividual parts of mixture look intact and visible. Solute+solvent don't appear to be the same Cookie dough, icecream, ramen noodles
- 15What is a solution and is it Homo or HeteroA solution is Homo
It appears to look like just one substance ex:Soft drinks, and W - 16What is a mechanical mixture and is it Homo or HeteroIt is a mixture in which all substances are different are visible
It is Hetero ex:bowl of candy
- 17What is a suspension and is it Homo or HeteroMixture where components are in different states
ex:Milk
- 18Classifications of matter

- 19History of the atomic model When did dalton make his major contributions to the atomic model1808 was the year where Dalton stated that elements are made of tiny balls of matter called elements. This is known as the billiard ball model
- 20When did Thompson make his major contributions to atomic theory and what were they1897 was the year when Thompson discovered the electron that describes an atom kind of like plum pudding where most of the atom is made of positive charges plum with smaller negative charges pudding

- 21What year did Rutherford make his contributions to atomic theory and what were they1911 was the year when rutherford found that atoms have a positively charged core the nucleus and that negative charges surround that core. He also found out that atoms have mostly empty space through the gold foil experement.
- 22What is the gold foil experimentHe found that since some of the alpha particles went through the barrier it must mean that they were mostly empty but since some of them bounced back he realised that they had a dense positive core

- 23What year did Bohr make his contributions to atomic theory and what were theyThat protons are all in the nucleus
That electrons are in definite energy levels
He thought that electrons move around the nucleus in definite orbits like how the planets move around the sun. This is called the solar system model - 24The bohr atomic model

- 25What were de broglie and Schrodinger's contribution to atomic theory and what year did they make those contributionsThought electrons are more of a negative cloud that is around the nucleus. Exact location of electron is not defined instead they occupy space at different energy levels.
- 26Schrodinger and debroglie atomic model

- 27What is the basis of chemical reactionssubstance or substances react to create a different substance or substances
Always involve the production of new substances with their own physical and chemical properties Energy is always absorbed or released during a chemical reaction Many involve a phase change(production of gas, change in color, energy change (temperature change or light produced), gas production, something burning, and the formation of a precipitate=solid) - 28What are Horizontal rows on the periodic called and how are they labelled what are vertical rows on the periodic table called and how are they labelledHorizontal rows are called periods and go 1-7
Vertical rows are called groups/families and are labelled 1-18 - 29What they look like

- 30Elements in the same period have what? The same number of electron shells/energy levels as their period
ex: f and Be are in period two so they have 2 electron shels - 31Elements in groups have whatSimilar chemical properties and the same valence electrons as group el
