  1. I. Linguistic Competence (LC): It is focused on the whole communicative act, including production and reception of messages within a context and with a specific linguistic code which can vary depending on the circumstances of the speech act. It involves the contact with cultural diversity as a way of life-long learning process because of the use of languages to transmit a worldview. This competence is very complex because it needs the interaction of different skills, but also because of its multimodality (it can appear in different dimensions such as phonetics, morphology, pragmatics, etc.)

  2. II. Mathematical Competence and Basic Competences in Science and Technology (MSTC): It is based on using and applying mathematical thinking to solve different everyday difficulties. It does not only include the mastery of numeracy, measurement, but also logical and spatial reasoning, technological tools’ use, the body of knowledge and methodology to explain the real world, by hypotheses formulation and conclusion making.

  3. IV. Learning to Learn (LTL): It is the most obvious outcome of life-long learning process and it is characterised by initiating, organising autonomously, self-controlling, planning, monitoring, assessing, and persisting in the learning process to adapt it to the circumstances by using critical and reflexive thinking before acting. This requires high motivation based on curiosity or the necessity to develop a task efficiently and strategically, but also, critical thinking about what she or he knows or ignores.

  4. V. Social and Civic Competence (SCC): This consists in using the ability to understand social attitudes and knowledge to interpret social events and problems with the aim of taking decisions or solving them democratically. Both are intended to shape complete citizens whose main values are democratic and moral. This competence fosters an understanding of living democratically, what is morally correct or incorrect, the human rights and responsibilities and main principles. Likewise, it is important to have knowledge of interculturality, socio-economic systems, history, cultures and ethnics, diversity, etc.

  5. VI. Sense of Initiative and Entrepreneurship (SIEC): This means knowing how to behave, to take action, to come up with ideas, to plan, to manage and to solve problems with the aim of achieving certain objectives such as shaping entrepreneurial citizens. Therefore, in this competence, many contexts are involved because society needs people who have cultural knowledge in general, as well as, knowing how the society functions and is organised. For those, students need essential skills such as analytical ability, adaptation, problem’-solving skills, self-esteem, leadership, negotiation, team-work, creativity, innovation, motivation, etc.

  6. VII. Cultural Awareness and Expression (CAC): It involves knowing most facts that surround a cultural or artistic manifestation, and using that knowledge as personal enrichment and as a way of communication and expression. That is why people need a specific language, techniques, resources, conventions, aesthetic trends, likes, creativity, imagination, techniques, working collaboratively and cooperatively, support, appreciation and respecting for other people’s realities.

  7. I. LC: English will provide useful tools not only for English communicative skills, but also to the own mother tongue; mostly because both are languages and they shape themselves, they use almost the same process of acquisition (Interlanguage Theory). Learning languages and learning cultures promote students’ intrinsic motivation towards learning. The reading project in the English subject and with other subjects. And at the same time an intercultural approach fosters the interaction of different skills (related to the contents’ blocks).

  8. II. MSTC: Many activities such as word-order or paragraph- order will enhance this type of competence. It will also increase the students’ ability of reflection. Activities in English that imply calculations, use of statistical data... when doing surveys, for example. Moreover, many trendy and scientific texts include specific vocabulary in English which is also used in Spanish.

  9. III. DC: Nowadays everything goes around ITCs, and English will contribute to the use of such technology and useful strategies. For most works and tasks they will search for information online; for that, they will use their critical thinking to filter it. It will foster the ability of organisation too.

  10. III. Digital Competence (DC): It consists on using in a creative, critical and safe way the ICTs to achieve objectives related with different contexts and to solve any problem. This competence involves the adaptation to a world in constant change, having adequate management of knowledge (to decode icons, sounds, graphs, etc.), skills, values and attitudes to adapt themselves to the digital era, assessing and selecting new information resources and innovations.
