Inferential Statistics

Formal methods, uses probability to determine how confident we can be that our conclusions are correct.

Probability

Mathematical tool used to study randomness.

Population

Persons, things, or objects under study.

Select a portion (or subset) of the larger population and study that portion

Statistic

Number that represents a property of the sample.

Sample

Parameter

A number that is a property of the population.

Variable

Characteristic of interest for each person or thing in a population

Datum

May be numerical or categorical

Single value
