1. First Law (Law of Segregation): Consider a person with two alleles for eye color, one from each parent. Let's represent the allele for green eyes as A and the allele for blue eyes as a. According to the Law of Segregation, during gamete formation, these alleles segregate so that each gamete (sperm or egg) carries only one allele for eye color. Therefore, a parent with genotype Aa will produce gametes with either the A allele (for green eyes) or the a allele (for blue eyes). When these gametes combine during fertilization, the offspring inherit one allele from each parent, resulting in various combinations like AA, Aa, or aa.
2. Second Law (Law of Independent Assortment): Now, let's introduce another gene that influences eye color, such as hair color, which is located on a different chromosome. According to the Law of Independent Assortment, the alleles for these two genes assort independently during gamete formation. So, the inheritance of one trait, like eye color (Aa), is not dependent on the inheritance of another trait, like hair color. This means that a person with green eyes might have any combination of hair colors, and these traits are inherited independently of each other.
