COMPUTER-ASSISTED LANGUAGE LEARNING
(CALL)
Have shifted dramatically over the last several decades with advances in technology and new discoveries in educational and psychological research
In the 1960’s, CALL was implemented to increase linguistic accuracy with technology
In the 1980’s, teachers started implementing CALL for enhancing student fluency (over accuracy) with the English language
The 21st century teachers started to use technology to provide more authentic contexts for facilitating social interaction among students and between students and larger communities.
To participate successfully in CALL, English learners will require some initial and ongoing training.
They will need to know how to operate the technology to be used in their language learning.
Students will need to be taught several things:
1. how to create a Google account and sign in
2. how to navigate to their Google Drive and begin a new Google Doc
3. how to share that Google Doc with their collaborators
4. how to use the text editing tools to create and provide feedback to one another about their collaborative text
5. how to export and save the final version of their group’s text
As teacherds we have to help to develop effectively our students technoogical skills in practical ways:
Try out any technology yourself that you’d like for students to engage with, give students the time and space to collaboratively debrief after using educational technology, this provides the opportunity for them to learn from one another and will give the teacher a chance to formatively assess areas for further instruction. Continually remind students that how they use technology is more important than which technology they use.
