Wire Bundle Ties

  1. Ease of installation, maintenance and inspection

  2. Cotton, nylon or fibreglass

  3. Precautions

    • Tight enough to prevent slipping
      • Not too tight as to cause cuts or deformation
    • No ties on wire bundles located inside conduits
    • Additional wires tied to exterior of bundle with ties at one foot intervals between clamps
    • New wires installed within support clamps and not on the outside of plastic ties
    • Ties required at intervals of 8 inches in normal areas
    • Ties required at intervals of 2 inches in high vibration areas
    • NO ties inside fuel tanks
  4. Knots for Wire Bundle Ties

    • Clove hitch and square knot
      • Two counter twisted knots to close
    • Optional Tie
      • Done on ties which tend to slip
      • Prior to making a clove hitch
    • Clove hitch and square knot to secure
      • Two counter twisted knots to close
  5. Tying to Protect Wire Bundles

    • Protect against chafing or abrasion by installing additional ties together with sleeving or tape
    • If bundle is tied to a connector single-leg backshell clamp, wire bundle must be wrapped with a minimum of 2 wraps of tape
  6. Plastic Wire Ties or Straps

    • Only installed with correct tool
    • Must not be used
      • Bundles with wire larger than 10 AWG
      • Unpressurised areas
      • High vibration areas
      • High temperature areas (higher than 85 degrees celcius)
      • Designated Fly By Wire
      • Aromatic Polyimide (AP) unless wrapped with tape
      • Coaxial cables
