Coligative properties
Boiling point elevation
- The boiling point of a solvent is increased when adding another compound.
- The solution has a higher boiling point than the pure solvent.
- Example
- Cooking: adding salt while boiling water will increase its boiling point, so it is actually hotter
Osmosis
- Diffusion between two liquids or gases which are able to mix through a semipermeable membrane.
- Example
- The absorption of water through the alimentary canal from stomach, small intestine and colon.
Freezing point depression
- The freezing point of a solvent is lowered by adding another compund.
- The solution has a lower freezing point than the pure solvent.
- Example
- Antifreeze: ethylene glycol prevents the water in cars' radiators from freezing.
