PHRASAL VERBS

  1. A phrasal verb is a verb that is made up of a main verb together with an adverb or a preposition, or both.

    • Typically, their meaning is not obvious from the meanings of the individual words themselves.
  2. TRANSITIVITY

    • Phrasal verbs can be intransitive (i.e. they have no object)
      • EXAMPLE: They set off early to miss the traffic..
        • The phrasal verb is: SET OFF
    • Transitive (i.e. they can have an object)
      • EXAMPLE : When the door is opened, it sets off an alarm.
  3. EXAMPLES

    • She has always looked down on me. the phrasal verb 'to look down on someone' does not mean that you are looking down from a higher place at someone who is below you; It means that you think that you are better than someone.
    • Most used compound verbs: Back up(apoyar),Bring up(mencionar algo), Carry out(llevar a cabo), Come across(encontrar alguien por casualidad,Find out(averiguar), Get along(llevarse bien), Give up(dejar un hábito), Get over(superar), Hurry up(darse prisa)
  4. These expressions are formed by combining verbs with prepositions or with adverbs. The meaning of these composite verbs can be very different from what we could infer from the individual meaning of the verb and preposition (or adverb) of which it is composed.
