Machining Processes

  1. Engineered products often need the removal of additional material this is called SECONDARY MACHINING or FORMING

    • TURNING
      • Use of a Lathe to make generally a round/Cylindrical shape
        • Work is held by a chuck and rotates
          • A cutting tool is used to shape the work
      • Facing off - leaving flat surface on end of work not in chuck
        • Drilling - Removing the inside of work with a drill bit
          • Parallel Turning - Removing material from work but keeping it the same size througout
            • Taper Turning - using a cutting tool at an angle to create a conical shape
              • Parting Tool - tool used to cut off the work at the correct length
    • MILLING
      • This machine has a spindle that holds a rotating cutter. The work is clamped down and the machine cuts the work to the desired shape.
      • Two Types of Milling Machine
        • Hoizontal
        • Vertical
    • DRILLING
      • Creating a circular hole in work using a drill bit
      • Different drill bits are used for different materials
        • Wood
        • Metal
        • Masonry (Concrete/Stone)
  2. SAFETY Accidents are normally caused by loose clothing, flying pieces of material, hand coming into contact with moving parts, Minor burns. SO THE CORRECT PROTECTIVE CLOTHING/EQUIPMENT IS NEEDED (Goggles, Apron etc)
