Navigation Modes

  1. Manual Navigation/Navigation

    • What is it?
      • Manual Transmition/Navigation is the process which a user navigates around a system manually, so they change the screen or go to another page.
    • Disadvantages
      • If a remote is not purchased, the user has to be close to the computer when presenting.
      • If there are a lot of animations and sounds, the user has to press the screen a lot, meaning that the action can get repetative and annoying.
      • If the area that you need to find cannot be found, it can be complicated to access the information you want.
    • Advantages
      • User can spend as much time as they like on one slide beofre they go to another.
      • The user can select what slides they want to see and in what order.
      • The user can control the presentation whilst talking.
      • The user can stop at certain slides or jump forwards and backwards between slides to clarify a point.
      • The user can stop and allow audiance parcipitation or questions if neccessary.
    • When would you use it?
      • Most powerpoints where information needs to be read (e.g. schools), web pages, documents, anywhere when human interaction is needed for a purpose.
    • Methods users can use manual transmission
      • Remote control on a powerpoint
      • Clicking a navigation bar
      • Internet history
  2. Automatic Transition/Navigation

    • When would you use it?
      • Advertisements, photo albums, in a place where there is no need for human interaction e.g. dentist
    • Advantages
      • No human interaction- can be left alone
      • Does not need anyone to click on the screen to advance
      • Times can be allocated to each slide to stay up for a certain amount of time
    • Disadvantages
      • If human interaction is required, automatic slide transmission is useless.
      • They are bad if the previous slide is needed to understand the next one
      • People take different times to take information in, so fixed timing is a bad option for multiple people to view.
      • Not good for non-linear presentations where the user selects the next slide
      • User cannot stop for emphasis or cannot stop to answer a question
      • Slides may go too fast or too slow
      • If you miss a slide, you have to wait for it to appear again
      • User may not want to view the whole presentation
    • What is it?
      • A pre-defined method of navigation that requires no human interaction
