Material/Manufacture: The white pipes are made from PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride). Using a double screw the PVC is extruded out into pipes. The holes would have been cut using a drill. The black terrace troughs are made from PP (Polypropylene) and injection moulding would have formed the shape. These products were just arranged to make this learning tool.
Aesthetics: The product is not very aesthetically pleasing and could be improved by adding some paint or design onto the plastic. However, the fact that it is positioned near to the fence means that the bright colours attract the children.
Consumer/Customer: The product was made by Mrs Doolan for the outdoor space. The consumer is the children who use the tool in order to learn about fluid movement and physics.
Cost: There was not a substantial cost to the school due to the fact that one of the teaching staff made the product for the outdoor space. The pipes, terrace troughs and zip-ties would not have cost more than £20.
Environment: The use of the plastic is one of the more unnatural products inside the outdoor space. The raw material of plastic is crude oil, which has to go through fractional distillation to produce naphtha. Although the plastic can be recycled, if it goes to landfill then it may cause environmental scarring due to the long time it takes to degrade. However, the terrace troughs can be reused for its original purpose of housing small plants.
Safety: The product has all smooth surfaces and so will not cause any cuts. There could be waterborne diseases in the water; however, this is unlikely due to the majority of the water coming from rain water.
Function: The product has the function of showing children how fluids such as water behave under gravity, and how it can be transported using problem solving skills, from trough to trough, encouraging the children to think outside the box and investigate.
Size: The terrace troughs have a width of 160mm, length of 600mm and height of 120mm. This allows for a decent volume of water to be able to fill the trough and for it to have a capacity of up to around 11520000mm cubed/11.52 litres. The PVC pipes have a diameter of 50mm with a 30mm hole cut through at the ends. The length varies from 560mm to 990mm. This also allows enough water to pass through.
