Police Department

  1. Hot Spot Technology

    • The hot spot technology will effect department and divisions in the police force by estimating where potential crime may be committed. This maximizes the effectiveness of police forces and gives police an idea of where crime may happen.
    • Police will have to be properly trained in understanding the Hot Spots Maps as well as learning what to look for within those hot spots in order to curb the criminal Activity.
    • The hot spot technology gives the police a good reason to talk to the citizens of the community whether to check on suspicious activity or just check on the citizens. This technology gathers information on previous crimes in order to determine where crime may be committed hourly. It does not invade privacy, which would be a plus in communities.
  2. Digital Manufacturing

    • Digital Manufacturing, or most popularly 3D printing, will affect the police departments and divisions depending how law and policy is made. If 3D printing is illegal, then Police will have a hard time keeping track of all the illegally made weapons known as Ghost guns. This could create an increase of weapons in society and people who may not legally be able to own a gun, being able to create on of their own with a 3D printer.
    • As of right now, transparency with 3D printed weapons are minimal. This is due to the lack of laws regarding homemade digitally manufactured weapons from criminals and hobbyists.
    • 3D printing weapons and other military styled weapons will affect manpower and training/hiring because police will need to be able to identify homemade weapons, and there will be an increase to unregistered weapons on the street.
  3. Drone Technology

    • Police officers will need to be taught on how to deal with drone activity and counter surveillance. Increased training on how to operate drones and where to effectively use them is important in order to not invade the privacy of others.
    • Public perception on police drones may be opposed. These drones can be an invasion of privacy for the typical American Citizen. I do not see police drones being positively accepted by society.
    • Police departments have trouble identifying how to deal with drones showing suspicious activity. On the other side, it is heavily debated on whether police departments should be able to surveille areas with their own drones, due to it being an invasion of privacy. However, Police drones can be used for a number of things such as surveillance for emergency situations, and tactical operations. https://www.droneusainc.com/police-drones
  4. Police Body Cameras

    • Communities will feel more comfortable and trust can be built a lot easier if citizens know that police are being surveilled and constantly checked. Also, knowing every cop has a body camera may deter people from harming the police officers.
    • Body cameras will be able to detect which police are fit to be officers and which ones are not very quickly. Departments will be able to identify "bad" cops by how they act on camera. Training will be appearent with every action being recorded
    • Police Body cameras may effect the discretion of a police officer in either a positive or negative way. The body camera will record everything a police officer does, and therefore always provides evidence with every call the police respond to. This helps police stations have a better grasp on everything that went down for every traffic stop or police responding incident. However, Police may sometimes be afraid to act in situations involving their gun due to being afraid of getting in trouble afterwards.
  5. Digital Economy

    • The Digital Economy includes things such as crypto currency and bit coin. These are the financial transactions preferred by many drug dealers because it is practically all anonymous transactions. These transactions are hard to track and so many police departments are still trying to find the solution on cracking down on dark web activities involving crypto currency.
    • The new digital economy is going to create a new wave of law enforcement, all dedicated to cyber security. More training on technology and computer will be needed, and cyber security is a huge up and coming career.
    • A lot of questions on privacy is brought up with police pinpointing where illegal online transaction is being committed. Much of these transactions are anonymous and would require police to be watching citizens computer activity in order to catch illegal online banking transactions.
