Methods for Separating Mixtures
Heterogeneous
- Distillation
- Distillation is a good way to separate two or more pure liquids from a mixture. Distillation is a purification method in which the constituents of a liquid mixture are evaporated, then condensed and separated. A mixture is heated, and the most volatile component vaporizes at the lowest temperature in simple distillation. The vapor is forced through a cooled tube (condenser) and condenses back into liquid. The collected condensate is known as distillate.
- Solubility
- A separation process is a method for separating a chemical combination or solution into two or more separate product mixes. At least one of the separation's result mixtures is enriched in one or more of the elements of the source mixture.
- Decantation
- Decantation is a method of separating mixtures of immiscible liquids or combinations of a liquid and a solid, such as a suspension. During the separation of two immiscible liquids, a partial separation is seen. To put it simply, decantation is the process of separating an immiscible solution by moving the solution's top layer to another container.
- Cristallization
- Crystallization is most commonly used as a separation process to create pure crystals of a material from an impure mixture. Crystallization is also used to extract pure salt from saltwater, which is an essential use. Crystallization can also be employed to create pure alum crystals from impure alum.
- Filtration
- Filtration is a process of separating pure substances from mixtures of particles, some of which are big enough to be collected by a porous medium. Given the type of combination, particle size might vary greatly. Some water filters can remove germs as small as 1 micrometer in length.

Homogeneous
- Chromatography
- Chromatography is the separation of a mixture by passing it through a media in which the components flow at various speeds, either in solution or suspension, or as a vapor. Thin-layer chromatography is a form of chromatography that is used to separate and identify mixtures that are or may be colored, particularly pigments.
- Extraction
- The extraction is a separation procedure that involves the separation of a material from a matrix. Liquid-liquid extraction and solid phase extraction are two common examples. Partition theory describes an equilibrium state in which a solute is distributed between two phases.
- Magnetism
- Magnetic separation makes use of variations in material magnetic characteristics. Minerals are classified as ferromagnetic, paramagnetic, or diamagnetic based on their magnetic characteristics.
