Pedagogical Approaches

  1. Sociocultural model

    • This model focuses on the idea that learning is a social and collaborative process. According to Lev Vygotsky, knowledge is constructed in interaction with other, more experienced individuals through the mediation of cultural tools and symbols.
    • Characteristics: 1.Understands the individual and the learning process from an evolutionary perspective 2.Takes into account the instruments and signs that mediate between the process of social interaction and individual development 3.Recognizes that there are innate abilities (perception, attention, and memory), but their development is made possible through social interaction
    • Advantages: 1.Develops social skills 2.Increases student motivation and commitment 3.Facilitates the application of knowledge to practical situations 4.Considers knowledge as something that changes and evolves, is adaptable, and shares perspectives
    • Disadvantages: 1.Possible lack of interest in group work 2.Context dependence 3.Can present challenges for the teacher 4.Can hinder attention to specific learning styles
    • Example: In Art, ask students to research and present traditional dances or songs from their community.
  2. Cognitivist Model:

    • Characteristics: 1.It seeks to develop skills for understanding, interpreting, processing, and applying information. 2.The teacher plays a role as a guide and mediator, facilitating the learning process, providing feedback, and supporting mental connections. 3.Discovery learning is promoted.
    • This is a learning method that consists of several mental operations based on experience and the processing of information that an individual performs based on this information, in order to assimilate knowledge and provide a response. Therefore, existing ideas are connected in the mind with new information to deepen memory and retention capacity.
    • Advantages: 1.It helps increase confidence in facing challenges and challenging tasks that arise. 2.Students develop a deeper understanding of new concepts, topics, and information. 3.Students acquire problem-solving skills, which can be applied inside and outside the classroom. 4.It allows students to connect prior knowledge with newly acquired information.
    • Disadvantages: 1.Designing activities and promoting reflection can require more time and resources. 2.Teachers with specific training in cognitive principles are required for their correct application. 3.Learning may require constant guidance, which can limit autonomy if not properly managed. 4.It can neglect social and contextual factors that influence learning.
    • Example: Before teaching fractions, review everyday examples with students (cutting a pizza or dividing a cake).
  3. Traditional educational model:

    • Characterized by the marked difference in roles between the teacher and the student. In this type of educational system, the student is a passive recipient of information, while the entire educational process is carried out by the teacher.
    • Characteristics: - The main learning tool for students is memory. - Exams and assessment tests allow the teacher to observe whether students have acquired the knowledge. - Practice and repetition ensure that students have established the knowledge.
    • Advantages: 1. Builds self-discipline and promotes the development of personal effort. 2.Favors memory processes. 3. Effective way to transmit raw data, such as dates and numerical data. 4. Enables the transmission of knowledge to a large number of students.
    • Disadvantages: 1. Focuses solely on memory processes. 2. Assessment methods generate stress and anxiety. 3. Knowledge acquired with this method can be forgotten over time. 4. Creativity and curiosity are not stimulated.
    • Example: The history teacher lectures on the events of Independence, and the students copy dates and names into their notebooks.
  4. Constructivist model:

    • This is a learning method in which students are provided with the necessary tools to connect their skills and prior experiences in a personal way, which seeks to help them construct their own knowledge. Students are learning constantly and about several topics simultaneously.
    • Characteristics: 1.Students construct their own knowledge through their unique experience and perspective. 2.Knowledge is actively constructed through reflection and experimentation. 3.Knowledge is built on a specific concept, related to experience and prior knowledge.
    • Advantages: 1.Students are seen as capable learners and agents. 2.Fun approach to learning. 3.Student-centered. 4.Provides developmental guidance for students.
    • Disadvantages: 1.Time-consuming. 2.Does not fit standardized testing. 3.Requires differentiation. 4.Lack of student motivation.
    • Example: In Natural Sciences, build a model of an ecosystem and explain how the living beings that inhabit it interact.
  5. Behaviorist Model

    • This is a learning theory that states that behavior is acquired through interaction with the environment, through conditioning. Therefore, behavior is a response to a stimulus. This theory only deals with behaviors in response to observable stimuli.
    • Characteristics: 1. Establishes that people can be influenced by stimulation. 2.Implements the experimental method. 3. Behaviors learned are cumulative and organized in order of priority.
    • Advantages: 1.Effective teaching strategy provides clear and reliable rules that can help establish high expectations. 2.Aids in psychotherapy. 3.Enables planning, organization, and regulation of student behavior. 4.Focuses on observable behaviors, allowing for a more objective assessment of learning.
    • Disadvantages: 1.Constraints students on performing predefined activities. 2.Critical thinking is not encouraged. 3.Focuses solely on external rewards. 4.Does not consider the emotional side of human behavior.
    • Example: Give points, stars, or stickers as rewards for good behavior or completed tasks.
  6. Humanistic Model

    • This model is based on the premise that each student is a unique individual with different abilities and needs. It considers that learning should not focus solely on the acquisition of academic knowledge, but also on the student's emotional and social development.
    • Characteristics: 1.Bonuses of trust are prioritized between students and teachers, as well as among students. 2.It promotes the ability to question, analyze, and reflect on information. 3.It recognizes the impact of emotions during the learning process, seeking a positive environment.
    • Advantages: 1.Fosters autonomy and empowerment in students 2.Emphasizes self-esteem, intrinsic motivation, and personality development 3.Creates a positive and motivating environment for students, pushing them to be their best 4.Offers a more inclusive experience where students can achieve success based on their needs
    • Disadvantages: 1.Assessment and personalized approach make process measurement challenging 2. Potential limitation in fundamental knowledge 3.Risk of subjectivity 4.Lack of experimental evidence
    • Example: Before starting class, take a few minutes for each student to share how they are feeling.
