1. Symbols

   • a general term referring to any mark, sign, sound, or gesture that communicate meaning based on social agreement
     • Examples: boat, scratching head, icon, robot dance, art, memorials, architecture, etc.

2. 3 things rhetoric involves beyond persuasion

   • 1. achieving clarity through structured use of symbols
   • 3. Bringing about mutual understanding through careful managements of common meaning attached to symbols
   • 2. Awakening our sense of beauty through aesthetic potential of symbols

3. persuasion is everywhere, we can't avoid it because it exists in all areas in our society (economics, romance, medicine)

4. Architectonic

   • Rhetoric is growing
   • Organizes and structures other arts and disciplines
   • If rhetoric is a study of how we organize/ use language effectively, it is also a study of how we organize our thinking on other subjects
   • it's a kind of master discipline that controls all others

5. Rhetoric

   • the systematic study and intentional practice of effective symbolic expression
   • where "effective" = achieving the purposes of the symbol-user (involves persuasion, clarity, beauty, mutual understanding)
   • the way our society is organized is based on persuasion (what should I wear, where should I eat?)
   • We can not help but be RHETORICAL
