Particle Model of Matter

  1. Explains the three states of matter

    • Solid
      • Fixed, regular arrangement
      • High density
      • Vibrate slightly
    • Liquid
      • Particles can move past each other easily
      • Less dense
      • More energy than solids
    • Gas
      • Free to move independantly
      • low density
      • high energy
  2. Density

    • Density = mass/volume
    • you can measure density by measuring water displacement with a eureka can then using the displaced water as your volume for the object
  3. Internal energy

    • Internal energy is the energy the particles have as a combination of their kinetic and potential energy stores
  4. specific latent heat

    • energy goes into breaking bonds instead of increasing temperature
    • The energy needed for 1 kg of a substance to change state
    • Energy = mass * specific latent heat
  5. Pressure and gasses

    • When gasses collide with a container, pressure occurs as the net force pushes outwards
    • Pressure and volume are inversely proportional at a constant temperature
