Resource summary

EMBODIMENT
  1. Traditionally: Cartesian dualism or monist (reduction to genes) views
    1. Discursive psychology. FOUCAULT - embodied self is social object, object of discourse. Link to power relations = categories determine what is normal and what isn't, fat, thin, ugly, normal etc..Marilyn Monroe's body vs Kate Moss. Tyranny of slenderness etc. POWER AND KNOWLEDGE ARE INTERLINKED, e.g. classification of illness makes it okay, CFS, ME, ADHD. BORDO - eating disorders are the result of female collusion with male patriarchal ideas of beauty. Therefore bodies are not simply biological but are constructed through social and cultural forces. They can be resisted, e.g. Queer Theory (CAMERON)
