King Lear and Cordelia
- When Lear asks his three daughters how much they adore and love him, Cordelia's answer does not please him. This leads to Lear banishing her and disowning her as his child.
- Cordelia's resistance to her father is not a statement on her personal autonomy or the rights of her individual will (K.Ryan, 1993:49). She speaks with maturity, she is the central focus -the heart- of her emotions (Canneto).
- Lear: To thee and thine hereditary ever remain this ample third of our fair kingdom... Now, our joy... What can you say to draw a third more opulent than your sisters'? Speak. Cordelia: Nothing, my lord. Lear: Nothing? Cordelia: Nothing. (1.1.88-98)
