  1. Stretching a spring (RP 6)

    • Equipment
      • Clamp stand
      • 2X Clamps
      • 2X Bosses
      • Spring
      • Meter rule
    • Setup clamp stand
      • Attach meter rule and spring (vertically)
        • Attach wooden splint as a pointer (bottom of spring, horizontal)
          • Read position of spring (unstretched length)
            • Continue to add 1 newton weights to spring and record length of spring
              • Work out extension produced by adding each weight
                • Subtract length of unstretched from each reading
                • Plot extension agaisnt weight
                  • Find weight of mystery object
                    • Measure extension of the spring when object is hanging on it
                      • Read weight of object from graph
        • Top of spring = 0
    • work out the weight of a mystery object
    • The graph is a straight line
      • Tells us that extension is directly proportional to weight
        • Linear
      • Spring constant is found by dividing force by extension
    • If non-linear then...
      • Too much weight
        • Overstretched
      • Inelastic deformation
    • Spring = elastic
      • If weight is removed the spring returns to its original length
  2. Wave speed (P7)

    • Equipment
      • Toy car
      • Spring
      • pulley
      • 1N weight
      • Timer
      • Meter rule
    • Draw chalk lines evenly spaced out (10cm)
      • Attach toy car to spring, spring to pully and pulley to weight
        • Hold car at staring point
          • Let go of car and begin timer
            • The resultant force on spring (weight) makes the car accelerate
            • Record the time that the car passes each distance marker
              • Repeat the experiment several times, decreasing the weight
              • Acceleration of the car should be proportional to the weight of the end of the spring
                • a (acceleration) = Δv / Δt
                  • Δv is the change in velocity, and Δt is the amount of time it took for that change to occur.
