Alcohols

  1. Primary Alcohols

    • RCH2OH
      • RCHO + H2O
        • RCOOH
          • Carboxylic Acid
        • Aldehyde
          • Using Schiff Reagent if it turns magenta quickly it's an aldehyde
    • Heated under reflux with excess KCr2 and H2So4
      • reflux prevents aldehyde from escaping before it can oxidise to a carboxylic acid
        • excess KCr2 ensure there's enough agent to fully oxidise to COOH
          • distilled will give an aq. solution
  2. Secondary Alcohols

    • RCHOH
      • RCOR + H20
        • Ketone
  3. Tertiary Alcohols

    • RCOH
  4. Oxidising agent

    • Potassium Dichromate
      • (Cr2O7)2-
      • Turns from orange to green
  5. Test for alkenes

    • Add Bromine Water and if turns colourless it is an alkene as alkanes can't add to their structure.
