Inheritance, Gregor Mendel
  1. Stem cells
    1. Unspecialised embryonic cells
      1. Can be grown to replace tissuses, blood veins in the brain
        1. Can be used to combat inherited conditions
        2. Mendel
          1. Worked out how characteristics were inherited
            1. First to suggest seperately inherited characterisatics
              1. Took along time for his ideas to be accepted
                1. scientists didn't know about chromosomes and genes until after Mendel died.
              2. Genes are found on chromosomes
                1. Chromosomes are made from DNA which is a very long molecule with a double helix structire
                  1. Genes are short sections of DNA
                  2. everyone but identical twins have different genes
                    1. HUMANS have 23 pairs of chromosomes
                      1. 1 pair is the sex chromosomes
                        1. Females- XX
                          1. Males XY
                      2. Alleles
                        1. Dominant- masks the effect of another
                          1. Recessive- effect is masked by that of anothers
                            1. PHenotype- PHysical apperarance
                              1. Genotype- the Genetic make up- which alleles does the individual inhreit
                              2. Hetrozygous- same alleles eg. DD or dd
                                1. Homozygous- two different alleles eg. Dd or dD
                              3. Inherited diseases
                                1. cystic fibrosis
                                  1. caused by a recessive allele
                                    1. this means the allele must be inherited from both parents
                                    2. Can be passed on passed on from 2 parents who don't have it themselves as they could be carriers
