What do top students do differently?

  1. Basically it seeks to solve the fictional facts, what was true and what was not. To do this, Douglas Barton has spent the past 13 years comparing the habits, techniques, and practices of literally tens of thousands of students in Australia, South Africa, the UK, and the US. And what he's learned in this time is basically three key things.

    • The team's research had three key findings
      • 1, The best students don't necessarily do better because they have higher IQs or because they are smarter than others.
        • 2. There is a small set of skills that are statistically significant in explaining why top students do better than their peers, and these skills are relevant across countries.
          • 3. These skills can be taught and used by any student to improve their academic performance.
    • key skills
      • 1. High achievers take many more practice tests than their peers, and that helps the student go beyond just memorizing the material.
        • 2. The reason for the difference is that it is important to work hard on the right things.
          • 3. Many students create study schedules, but the vast majority of them stick to that schedule for less than a week. The best students, on the other hand, generally stick to their schedule for more than a month.
            • First they put the things they like to do (e.g. hobbies, sports, socializing, etc.)
            • Then they dedicate themselves to their study hours.
    • Things any student needs to know if they are looking to improve their grades.
      • The first of these things is that you don't need to worry about IQ.
        • Between 50% and 90% of students will say that IQ is the main driver of their results
        • EXAMPLE: Three years ago in Australia we interviewed 3,000 students before their high school final exams and asked these guys: What is going to be most important in impacting their final exam results? An overwhelming majority, and when I say overwhelming, I mean 90% of the students who came back and said that IQ would be the number one factor.
  2. Douglas Barton

    • Douglas is the founder and Global Chairman of Elevate Education. Douglas and Elevate has spent the last 13 years benchmarking the practices of the highest performing students in order to identify exactly what drives student performance.
