Will vs Going to

  1. It is used to express a promise, a prediction or something that you want to do in the future.

    • We use will to talk about the future when we are not quite sure what is going to happen, so we say what we think will happen.
      • Common mistake: Forget about will in the sentence I see you later is a mistake you have to avoid. It correct is I’ll see you later (Te see later).
    • for instance: My team will win on Sunday.
    • Remember that if we talk about the future, we use the future and not the present. Say: I'll call you tomorrow, although in Spanish you would say: I'll call you tomorrow.
  2. The future tense with "going to" is more commonly used in spoken language when

    • for instance:
      • She is going to pay with a credit card
        • I am going to swim next Saturday
          • She is going to make a cake today
            • They are going to wash the car
    • referring to the immediate future, that is, to something that is about to happen.
