Censorship Reforms

1. Reforms made

   • Newspapers, books and periodicals no longer had to submit work to be censored
     • Preventive Censorship
   • Newspapers could discuss government policy
     • Editors were given more freedom

2. Advantages

   • Relaxation of censorship led to a rapid increase in the no. of works published
   • Bolder writers and editors were able to push the boundary on sensitive topics
   • Allowed court cases to be reported
   • The public was becoming more informed

3. Disadvantages

   • Some journals were overly radical or critical of the regime
   • The Ministry of Interior did come close to shutting down some publishers
   • Social issues wre reported which the regime did not want exposed
     • Alcholism
     • Crime
     • Peasant suffering
