Intentions

  1. Audience is Ignorant

    • Ambiguous narrative that ends with a twist: the narrative will initially be perceived as a simply the physicalized version of the phrase "lack of free will", when in reality the exposition, rising action, and climax are all part of an experiment. This is revealed at the denouement, through the use of a video showing our beginning sequence, to exemplify the idea of being constantly watched.
      • Audience does not realize they have been a part of an experiment throughout the duration of the piece.
    • Based on assumption that the audience believes that they have free will-our piece is a critique on the individual's perception of control in modern society.
  2. Masked Reality

    • Use of blindfolds as literal masks, where Brenna and I are 'masked' and Anna is controlling us (in the moment where we are led offstage. Anna is always leading and Brenna and I are always following.
  3. Cyclical nature of life

    • Represented by circular narrative, in which the end of performance is similar to the beginning of the piece, in order to show that it is impossible to break out of this cycle, despite being cognizant of its occurance.
      • Repetitve nature of soundtracks. 'La Valse D'Amélie' by Yann Tierson is used as a motif in our piece, one that represents the illusion of peace and serenity that the audience chooses to believe.
  4. Lack of Free Will

    • Physicalization of relationship between master and servant, where Brenna and I are the servants and Anna is the master.
  5. Ruled by Authority

    • Soundscape with police sirens, with a physical movement sequence depicting a dance inspired by a police arrest.
