BAROQUE

1. What it is?

   • The name given to European culture which started in Italy in the XVII and finished on the XVIII century.

2. What was the aim of baroque?

   • Portray reality, use empiricism or rationalism.

3. Architecture

   • Characteristics: curved lines and solomonic columns, very rich ornamentation on fachades, altars... etc. The most importants architects were: Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Francesco Borromini and José de Churriguera.

4. Painting

   • Characteristics: Realism, sense of movement, strong emotions and expressions, variety of subjects and a technique called chiaroscuro(claroscuro) or tenebrism. One of the most importants painters was Rembrandt

5. Sculpture

   • Characteristics: realism, intense feelings, movement, energy and vitality, effects of lights using the folds. One of the most famous sculptor was Bernini.

6. Famous Spanish painters.

   • Diego Velázquez was known for his grat realism and the technique of chiaroscuro. He painted portrays of the royal family(Philip IV) like Las Meninas. Other famous painters are: José Ribera, Francisco de Zurbarán and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo
