Flashcards
Respiratory Substrates
Cards in this deck (10)
- 1Name 3 types of respiratory substratesCarbohydrates
Lipids
Proteins - 2TRUE OR FALSE: Different respiratory substrates enter respiration at different pointsTRUE
- 3Order the 3 types of respiratory substrate in order of energy value (from highest to lowest)HIGHEST
Lipids
Proteins
Carbohydrates
LOWEST - 4Why do lipids have the highest energy value? Most ATP is made in oxidative phosphorylation which requires hydrogen atoms from redNAD and redFAD.
This means that respiratory substrates that contain more hydrogen atoms per unit of mass cause more ATP to be produced when respired.
Lipids contain the most H atoms per unit of mass - 5What is the equation for RQ?RQ = (Volume of CO₂ released) /
(Volume of O₂ consumed)
OR
RQ = (Molecules of CO₂ released) /
(Molecules of O₂ consumed) - 6What is the RQ for proteins?0.8 - 0.9
- 7What is the RQ for lipids?0.7
- 8What is the RQ for carbohydrates?1.0
- 9What can RQs be used for?To determine which substrate is being used
- 10Why are RQs considered unreliable?Very few organisms only use one type of substrate. It gives you an indication of which substrate is being used but you can never be sure
