The Crusades:

West

East

Roman empire split

Roman Empire Split

West was weak

East loosing grip

Pope loosing power and influence

Turks gaining power and influence

Centrality of religion

Influence of church

Turks set sight on byzantium

Life was brutal and violent

Holy land lost by Romans and controlled by Turks

Alexios (Byzantine Empire) called on Pope Urban the second for help.

This was considered rather strange because they always were rivals.

What pope Urban was looking for: (long-term)

more power for him and the church

recaliming the lost areas

setting the knights away from the church and to the Holy Land

Bringing back jerusalem for the Christians.

What Alexios was looking for: (short-term)

A bunch of knights to fight for the Hold Land

Looks to the pope as if co-religionists and brothers

be able to push back the Turks and maintain control

SO..

What did Pope Urban do?

he created the Council of Clermont:

he united the christians together and gave them a common enemy

he gave a speech about the rewards of the crusades

excuse of horrible treatement of pilgrims

it was in 1095 in France

What were the pope's goals?

He wanted to stop the turkish expansion

maintain the Holy Land

Protect christian pilgims

increase his power as pope

unite the christians to one goal

Reasons for joining the Crusades: (BESIDES THE RELIGIOUS BELIEFS)

The nobles hoped to get more lands and add to their fortunes

The knights finally get what they always wanted to do: fight and this time it was an advantage because it was for God

The peasants were told that they would be released from feudal obligations.
