Chunking:

What is Chunking?

focussed practice ; repetition results in creating chunks

what is chunk?

Music Learning : Listen ; - chunk ; play a bit; repeat;

then knit the bits to create a pattern

worked examples are an example of chunks formation;

How chunking can be done when you learn?

step 1: focus is must for chunking ; eliminate distractions : focused attention

step 2: understanding is pretty important

Step 3: Understanding alone not chunking; Aha does not mean chunking; Practicing only means chunking

when you learn new subject :

learn both top-down and bottom-up

context: top down learning : what you are learning ? where it fits? when to use the learning? : ex., Try taking a "picture walk" through the material to gain big picture context before diving into the details.

Chunking is bottom-up ; fit many chunks and you get the big picture!

Recall : Concept:

Recall is an important rather than rereading and concept mapping;

illusions of competence : merely glancing the solution will not help

because the concepts are not embedded in your brain:

Page 3

seeing the big picture:

create a library of chunks ; focused;

use diffused mode to link the chunks;

Page 4

Overlearning:

continuing to practice after focussed learning on easy subjects

this leads to Deliberate practice:

Interleaving :

mixup your learning : jump to problems ahead and try to solve it

jump to different chapters and learn and solve ;

recall;

helps develop creative power; this can be done within subject , across subjects

In Einstellung, your simple initial thought, an idea you already have in mind, or a neural pattern you’ve already developed and strengthened, may prevent a better idea or solution from being found.
