Discuss/List the use of study models in the design of a Removable Partial Denture.
Study models serve a number of uses, of which the most important are:
Examination of the occlusion: making it possible to view the teeth from a lingual aspect. This enables tooth contact to be examined to determine space for occlusal rests.
Model Surveying: determine the path of insertion and removal of denture. To locate undercuts
Trial preparation of teeth: analysis of the occlusion reveal need for modification of teeth.
Construction of special trays: A study model can be used to construct a special tray that can be used to take a secondary impression, and then produce a master model.
Communicating with the patient and the dental technologist: The clinician is able to show the patient the type of treatment, and design of prosthesis prior to production, by using the models. The clinician can also then use the models to communicate plans, designs, or any specific requirements of prostheses to the technician.
