  2. Meaning of affixes

    • An affix is a letter or series of letters added to a root word (stem) that can change its meaning.
    • Types of Affixes:
    • Prefix: a letter or group of letters added to the beginning of a word to make a new
    • suffix: means a letter or group of letters added at the end of the word
    • In this lesson, we will work with suffixes that make nouns.
  3. suffix in nouns

    • There are some rules need to be considered such as some suffixes only applicable on verbs in order to make it a noun.
    • EX. refuse (v) Refusal (n)
    • demonstrate(v) Demonstration (n)
    • In this lesson, we will work with 5 suffixes:
    • -ment
    • -tion

  4. Suffixes added to verbs

    • Study (v) Student (n)
  5. How to change a verb to noun?

    • There are useful ways you can use to change the verb to noun with the right suffix:
    • Locate the verb: a verb is an action word.
    • Add an appropriate determiner before the word: for example use (the) , (a) or (an) before the verb so you can make sense of it when you pronounce it.
    • Rewrite the sentence: write the sentence again and try to change the location of the verb after you add the suffix. Ex: Many students prefer to choose their groups members, Choosing groups member is a preference to many students.
    • Consult a dictionary to double check your suffixes: it is a good way especially when English language is not your first language.
  6. Now is your turn!

    • The document below has 10 verbs, you are required to change them into nouns using the appropriate suffix
