1. When was it?

   • Aug-Sept 1914 after the retreat of BEF at Mons

2. What happened?

   • Germans were only 40km from Paris and were met by French and British troops
   • Massive counter attack struck the exposed German flank
     • The French army and the BEF drove a "wedge" and created a 30 mile gap between the German army.
       • German forces retreated north and Paris was NOT captuted
         • Both sides began digging trenches

3. 2 million soldiers fought

   • Over 500,000 casualties
