Chapter 3 Vocabulary
Abstract data type- In computer science, an abstract data type (ADT) is a mathematical model for data types where a data type is defined by its behavior (semantics) from the point of view of a user of the data, specifically in terms of possible values, possible operations on data of this type, and the behavior of these operations
ArithmeticException exception- A JCRE owned instance of ArithmeticException is thrown when an exceptional arithmetic condition has occurred. For example, a "divide by zero" is an exceptional arithmetic condition
Assignment statement- formed with an equals sign
Case sensitive- an uppercase is different than a lowercase
Class- a data type that can store data and methods
Concatenate- the value of a variable to a string
Constant- memory storage that cannot be changed
Data type- determines the type of data the variable will store
Declaration- a variable that has been declared
Equal sign (=) - an operator for the variables
Exception- an error affecting program
Floating point- numbers after the decimal type
Identifier- the variable name
Initialize- in addition to the variable being declared it is also initialized
InputMismatchException exception- when user input is not as expected
Input stream- characters received from an input device
Instantiation- create a new object
Integer division- truncates the decimal portion
Keyword- a word with special meaning
Literal- the value on the right of the "=" in the assignment statement
Logic error- a semantic error
Modulus division- returns the remainder
Numeric expression- at least one operand and possibly
Object- a variable declared with a class
Operator precedence- the level assigned to an operator so that a specific order of operations is maintained
Primitive data type- a data type that can store only a single piece of data
Prompt- a string that informs the user of the expected data to be typed
Run-time error- error affecting run time
Semantic error- logic error
Syntax error- error caused by a statement that violates the rules of Java
Truncate- removing the decimal portion of a number when casting a double to an int
Type casting- converting a number from one type to a different type
Variable- a name for a memory location that stores a value
Boolean- denoting a system of algebraic notation used to represent logical propositions, especially in computing and electronics
char- a single character
double- type of data
final- a word used to define
import- to put something onto your computer
in-
int- integer
java.lang- language used in java
java.text- classes used to code
java.util- utilities
NumberFormat- how you type a number
Scanner- a device that scans information
System.in- what you put into the system
