The Event

• Water rising incredibly quickly
• Jhelum river burst its banks
• Worst flooding in 60 years
• Heavy rain last 5 days
• Embankments breached
• Srinagar city = lake
• September 2014
• Low pressure area formation in NW bay of bengal

The Impacts

• Erodes under flood walls, water flows through
• Embankments breached
• Srinagar city = lake
• All hospitals in Srinagar submerged
• Kashmir = valled of misery
• 100’s villages lost power- not water but flooding but landslides
• Over 160 dead

The Response

• People were told to stay put
• Neighbors help eachother
• People wait to be rescued on terraces, rooftops
• Little fuel, little power, medical supplies running low
• 10,000 blankets, 3,000 tents to be distributed
• ‘Air sortie’ air drops to deliver aid
• 50 medical teams deployed
• Can only use helicopters, difficult to navigate and land on helipads because of the hills
• Medical supplies and blankets coming from Chanpur
