Application software- software that you add to a computer to increase the functionality.

examples- office+Photoshop (word processing + graphics)

Propriety software

(example Microsoft office + Photoshop) - propriety software belongs to someone (it has been bought) you buy the licence to use it.

why do we buy it?

it is useful

full of feature

compatible

lots of employers use it

lots of online help

Negative-

expensive

no automatic updates

Open source software

when you get the software, you own the software. You get the code, it is available for free. You can develop it, change it and give it to other people.

Examples- GIMP, open office, libre office, inks cape

Positives- free, can customize, free updates

Negatives- not so many features, may not be compatible, not so much online help (as not as many people are using it), if there is help it might be too technical (confusing), does not look very nice.

Cloud based application software-

It is a remote server

Positives- lots of storage, more secure, access it anywhere as long as you have an internet connection, good for collaboration

Negatives- may not be compatible with all devices, not fully features, lack of online help

Examples- Google drive, sky drive

Lite trial version-

Negative- less features, may run out (trail period), limitations

Positives- free, good for one off using
