Kartarpur Bir

• Installed in Harmander Sahib in 1661
• Was kept by Guru Hargobind in his house
• Stolen by Dhir Mal (Guru’s Ji grandson) - wanted to be Guru
• 30 years later, followers forcibly recovered it but were instructed to return it to Guru Tegh Bahadur
• Placed it in the shallow river bed of the Satluj River
• Dhir Mal recovered it and it was undamaged
• Refused to give it to Guru Gobind Singh Ji
• Guru Gobind Singh undertook to prepare a new edition of the Granth Sahib
• Throughout 18th century, its most likely to be with Dhir Mal’s family (Sodhis of Kartarpur)
• Holy book next emerged from obscurity in 1849
• The Kartarpur Bir is preserved to this day
