  4. 4Long Term Memory is split into three different types. These are known as episodic memory, semantic memory and procedural memory. Episodic memory is the memory for certain [blank_start]events[blank_end] - these are time stamped. Semantic memory is for general [blank_start]knowledge[blank_end], e.g. knowing that Paris is the capital of France. These are not time stamped. However, both episodic and semantic memory require [blank_start]conscious[blank_end] recall. Procedural memory is the memory for how to carry out actions, e.g. riding a bike. This is an unconscious memory and you cannot explain it to people. Evidence from brain [blank_start]scans[blank_end] suggest that these memory types are genuinely different. [blank_start]Tulving[blank_end] asked participants to recall different types of memory and different bits of the brain lit up on the scan. In addition, case studies suggest these memory types are different - Clive [blank_start]Wearing[blank_end] for example had fine procedural memory and semantic memory but no episodic memory.
