1Issues with the integrity of research can include unconscious bias and errors of methodology ("bad science") as well as intentional data falsification or fabrication ("misconduct & fraud") (Figure 1). There are many reasons why researchers may engage in poor research practice, such as a lack of adequate training, financial pressures and mental health issues. As the pressure to ‘publish or perish’ intensifies the integrity of biomedical research is increasingly threatened. The media plays a crucial role in holding researchers and their claims to account by investigating, reporting and publicising issues when research is called into question.
As in most professions, medical research has as strict set of rules by which researchers must adhere. The Australian code for the responsible conduct of research implemented by the NHMRC & ARC sets out the code of conduct for biomedical research. There are eight principles which are hallmarks of responsible research;
