Science: Physics Gravity

Cards in this deck (16)

  1. 1What is a gravitational force?Gravitational force is the force of attraction between masses.
  2. 2What are the two important effects of gravity?1) On the surface of a planet, it makes all things fall towards the ground.
    2) It gives everything a weight.
  3. 3What is mass?Mass is just the amount of 'stuff' in an object. For any given object this will have the same value anywhere in the universe.
  4. 4What is weight?Weight is the force acting on an object due to gravity (the pull of the gravitational force on the object).
  5. 5Why does the gravitational field strength vary with location? It's stronger the closer you are to the mass causing the field, and stronger for larger masses.
  6. 6What does the weight of an object depend on?The strength of the gravitational field at the location of the object.
  7. 7What is weight measured in?Weight is a force measured in newtons.
  8. 8What is its centre of mass? When the force is acting from a single point on the object. This is a point which you assume the whole mass is concentrated.
  9. 9What is weight measured using?A calibrated spring balance or newton meter.
  10. 10What is mass measured in?Kilograms
  11. 11What are mass and weight?Mass and weight are directly proportional.
  12. 12Equation:Weight(N)=Mass(kg) x Gravitational Field Strength(N/kg)Equation:
  13. 13Who discovered gravity?Sir Isaac Newton
  14. 14What is a force?A push or pull acting on an object. It can cause an object to move or change direction.
  15. 15What other forces act on moving objects?Friction, air resistance, counteracting gravity.
  16. 16—
