1.3, 1.4: Separating Mixtures

Deleted user User has deleted their subject information English 8 cards

Cards in this deck (8)

  1. 1What is the difference between a compound and a mixture?A compound is joined by a chemical bond whilst a mixture is not
  2. 2List some methods of separating.• sieving
    • filtrating
    • distillation
    • evaporation
    • chromatography
  3. 3Define: a) miscible liquids b) immiscible liquidsa) liquids that do dissolve into each other- often separated using fractional distilling
    b) liquids that do not dissolve into each other- for example, oil and water
  4. 4What is fractional distilling?• an effective way of separating miscible liquids using a fractional column.
    • this is possible because of the different boiling points of the liquids in the mixture
  5. 5What is the difference between simple and fractional distillation?• simple distillation is used when the substances have a significant difference in boiling points
    • whereas if the boiling points of the two liquids in the mixture are close, fractional distillation is more efficient
  6. 6What is paper chromatography?separates mixtures of substances dissolved in a solvent as they move up a piece of chromatography paper
  7. 7Why does chromatography work? The different substances are separated because of their different solubilities in the solvent used.
  8. 8Where is chromatography used?It is used in the food industry and forensic science.
