Superposition

Cards in this deck (7)

  1. 1What is the principle of superposition? When two or more waves of the same type meet at a point, the resultant displacement of the oscillations will be the vector sum of the individual displacements.
  2. 2When will constructive interference occur? If both waves have the same sign (positive or negative) displacement
  3. 3When will destructive interference occur? At the point of overlap, if one wave has a positive displacement and the other has a negative displacement
  4. 4Constructive and destructive interference can be for both.....Progressive and standing waves
  5. 5If we superpose two of the same wave, what happens? The amplitude of the new wave is double the original(s)
    This is constructive interference
  6. 6If we superpose two waves in anti-phase (180 degrees out of phase) we get.....A flat-line
    This is destructive interference
