Flashcards
ID in SLA: Cognitive Factors TESTS Explained
Cards in this deck (7)
- 1APTITUDE> MLAT (I): (50s-Carroll; improved by Meara- LLAMA)1.[input] PHONETIC CODING ABILITY: Ability to make a link btwn sound and symbol, to code foreign sounds, and to distinguish them from others (have a good ear)
2.[processing] GRAMMATICAL SENSITIVITY: Ability to segment input and recognize grammatical functions of words in sentences (e.g. subject and object, reference system...)
3.[processing] INDUCTIVE LANGUAGE LEARNING ABILITY:
Ability to identify patterns of form-meaning from input (''noticing'' and ''inferring''/''guessing''), using reasoning abilities
4.[memory] ROTE LEARNING ABILITY: Ability to store and retrieve linguistic items - 2MLAT (II)-It's criticised, e.g. for being based on rote learning; aptitude as fixed; language competence; aptitude as global concept; focus on predicting SLA rate in formal settings
-The interest now is not on rate but on ultimate attainment - 3MLAT (III)-Findings:
·Aptitude is one of the strongest predictors of SLA success: traditional correlation scores > from r= 0.4 to r= 0.6
·Different abilities correlate with L2 success at different stages:
Young sts > more proficient when having better memory
Adults > score higher when better at language analytical abilities
·L2 aptitude (or at least grammar sensitivity) correlates with L1 literacy skills and with general intelligence (IQ) measures - 4MLAT (IV)-Implications: sts' aptitude and teacher's efforts will affect the rate of learning and acquisition
- 5HI-LAB (Doughty)-Still being developed
-Highly sophisticated instrument designed to identify individuals capable of achieving high levels of attainment
-Test= aptitude as a ''measurable ceiling'' on the ultimate attainment and intended to ''address the need for an aptitude battery geared for professional levels''
-Actual test: language history questionnaire and 11 separate and cognitive and perceptual subsets - 6HI-LAB (II)-Findings:
·One of the strongest predictors of SLA success
·Different abilities correlate
·L2 aptitude correlates with L1 literacy skills and general intelligence measures > MLAT: best predictor of SLA
·More research and better constructors are needed - 7HI-LAB (III)-Implications:
·Teachers need to be aware of individual capacities > develop learning
·Sts' attitudes an teachers' efforts will affect the rate of learning acquisition and the ultimate level of attainment, not the route of acquisition
