About IPv6 Addressing

GoConqr Original

Start with the address format

The IPv6 Addresses mind map introduces IPv6 as the successor to IPv4 and includes a comparison of the two. Use it for an overview before moving to the mind map titled IPv6. That map looks at address notation, including how leading zeros can be dropped and how a string of zeros can be represented. It also introduces loopback and link-local addresses.

As you study the map, write out the notation rules in your own words. Then look at its examples again and check that you can recognize the shortened forms. The map also includes address naming and subnet information, so you can return to it as you work through the other resources.

Practice with quizzes

After the maps, try BCS Principles of Networking - IPv6. Its questions cover the purpose of IPv6, address length, formatting and ways to simplify addresses. Use the questions to identify which parts of the map you want to study again.

Test 8 moves into questions about a successful ping to the IPv6 loopback address, ICMP messages and the parts of a global unicast address. Work between the quiz and the maps: check a concept in a map, then return to the question and consider the answer again.

Explore address types

The notes titled IPv6 cover link-local and global unicast addresses. Use them alongside the IPv6 Special Addresses flashcards, which list examples of special address forms. The IPv6 Address Types mind map offers another resource to explore as you organize your understanding of address types.

Continue within the unit
