About Map Scale

GoConqr Original

Start with a mind map

Map scale describes the relationship between a distance on a map and the corresponding distance on the ground. The mind map titled Maps and Scales introduces that relationship and gives an example of a ratio scale. Start there to get an overview before looking at the different ways scale can be expressed.

Mapping Skills also covers scale statements and representative fractions. Use it alongside the first map to compare a scale written in words with one shown as a ratio.

Practice with flashcards and quizzes

The flashcards titled Geography ask about the definition of scale, line scale, scale statements and representative fractions. After reading a mind map, try answering the flashcard questions in your own words. Return to the maps when you want to check a term or review a relationship.

Then try Map Scales - Graphing Test, which includes direct statement and representative fraction scales. Another quiz uses a model to introduce the idea of proportion and asks about direct statement scales. Use the quiz questions to identify ideas you want to look at again in the maps or flashcards.

Explore size and distance

The Size and Scale mind map focuses on the relationship between the size of an area on a map and its actual size on Earth. The Map Scale mind map also considers map size and the corresponding feature on the Earth's surface, including smaller and larger scales. The notes on measuring distance offer another way to explore how map scale is used.

Use the wider unit

Map Scale is one section of a wider Geography unit on map skills. The resources here let you focus on scale while connecting it to the broader task of interpreting maps. Choose a resource and work through it at your own pace.
