About Soil Science

GoConqr Original

What the resources cover

The mind maps make up the largest share of this unit. The SOIL map sets out soil fertility, soil texture (sand, silt and clay) and the major and minor nutrients. Root Environment looks at what soil does for a plant: physical support, and holding air, water and nutrients. Its excerpt breaks soil down into minerals, water, air, organic matter and living organisms.

Organic matter gets plenty of attention. Soils: Module 3 covers bulk density, CEC, buffering, water holding capacity and the carbon cycle. SF Soil looks at organic matter levels and how they change over time.

Management and practice

Irrigation covers why crops are watered and how needs vary with climate, crop, cultivar and growing season. Agricultural practise covers tillage, fertilisers, liming, manures and shifting cultivation. The note on crop rotation explains how to decide which crop goes where from one year to the next.

There are also maps on salinity, soil conservation, green manures and mycorrhizal fungi, plus a flashcard deck on soil salinity and sodicity.

Where to start

  1. Begin with SOIL and Root Environment to get the basic vocabulary.
  2. Move to Soils: Module 3 for organic matter and carbon.
  3. Look at Irrigation and Agricultural practise for management.
  4. Use the Soil Capability Classes flashcards to learn the class and subclass labels.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a map first, then take a quiz such as Soil Science Final - Quiz or Soil and Water Management. Note which questions you missed and go back to the matching branch of the map. Flashcard decks such as Soil Physics and fertilizers suit short, repeated sessions.

Where this unit sits

Soil Science belongs to the Plant Science, Soils and Water strand of Agriculture and agronomy. The resources were made by GoConqr users, so wording and depth vary. Choose a map that matches your course, then try the quiz that fits it.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the SOIL mind map, which sets out soil fertility, texture and the main nutrients. Then open Root Environment to see what soil is made of and what it does for plants. Once those feel familiar, try a quiz to check what has stuck.

What do the mind maps on this page cover?

They range from basics such as soil texture, nutrients and organic matter to irrigation, tillage, liming and manures. Others look at salinity, soil conservation, green manures, microbes and mycorrhizal fungi. There are over 30 maps, so you can follow one topic from several angles.

Are there quizzes I can use to test myself?

Yes, there are more than 10 quizzes. Examples include Soil Science Final - Quiz, Soil and Water Management, Improve Soil and Media and a quiz on salt affected soils. Use them after reading a map to find which topics need another look.

Are these resources free, and who made them?

Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Who is this unit suitable for?

Most resources are pitched at university students and professional candidates, with a smaller share for school students. Teachers can use the ready-made maps, decks and quizzes as class material. Because users made them, check each one against your own course.

What if the topic I need is missing?

Try a nearby title first. Soil management, soil conservation and salinity each appear in several resources. If nothing fits, you can make your own mind map, flashcards or quiz on the topic, which helps your revision too.
