About Warehousing and Material Handling

GoConqr Original

What the resources cover

Most of this page is mind maps. They look at why firms need warehouses, what warehouses do and how they are organized. The mind map Warehousing decisions sets out value-adding roles such as consolidation, product mixing and contingency protection, plus public warehousing services such as bonding. The mind map TYPES OF WAREHOUSES links warehouse types to customers, such as retail distribution centers.

Several maps follow a series called Integrated Warehouse Operations. They compare traditional and modern warehouses, and look at consolidate, cross-dock and break-bulk warehouses by distribution model.

Where to start

  1. Begin with Warehousing, which lists core functions: storage, order picking, put away, cross dock, and pick and pack.
  2. Move to warehousing (lowercase) for advantages, types and the reasons a business needs storage.
  3. Read the Integrated Warehouse Operations maps in date order to see how the ideas build.
  4. Look at Layout of a unit-load area and Material Handling for the physical side.

Using quizzes and maps together

There are only a few quizzes, so use them well. Read a map first, then take a quiz such as STORAGE AND WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT or Forklift Rules of Thumb. Note the questions you miss and go back to the matching branch of the map. Quizzes named after chapters or courses, such as Chapter 7 GSCM, work well once you know the basics.

A few flowcharts show receiving and checking of materials, and some resources are in Spanish, Turkish or Vietnamese. They can help if you study in those languages.

Where this unit fits

This unit sits in the strand Inventory, Warehousing and Cargo Handling, within the subject Logistics and supply chain. It pairs naturally with the inventory resources in that strand.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the mind map called Warehousing. It lays out the main functions, from receipt and inspection to storage, order picking and cross dock. After that, open the lowercase warehousing map for advantages and types, then move on to the more detailed operations maps.

What do the mind maps cover?

They cover why warehouses are needed, the main types such as public, bonded and government, and functions like storage and picking. Others look at distribution models, including cross-dock and break-bulk warehouses, warehouse layout, material handling and inventory management practices.

Are there many quizzes?

There are only a few quizzes here, as the page is mostly mind maps. They include STORAGE AND WAREHOUSE MANAGEMENT, Forklift Rules of Thumb and Chapter 7 GSCM. Use them after reading a map to check which topics you still need to review.

Are the resources free, and who made them?

Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Who are these resources suited to?

They suit university students and professional candidates learning how warehouses operate, and teachers who want ready-made material for a class. Many follow course chapters and lecture series, so they work well alongside a textbook or course notes.

Are all resources in English?

Most are in English, but a few are not. You will find a Spanish mind map and flowcharts, a Turkish note and a Vietnamese mind map. If you need something that is missing, you can make your own mind map or flashcards.
