Conflict a struggle between opposing forces or characters; a problem faced by the characters in a story
Person vs. Self problem with deciding what to do or what to think; internal conflict
Person vs. nature/higher power problem with a force of nature or god-like power (intangible, like addiction); external conflict
Person vs. person problem with another character; external
Person vs society/group problem with laws or beliefs of a group; external
Protagonist the central character around whom the story revolves. Experiences the conflict, does not have to be "good", and is the main character, not necessarily a hero.
Antagonist a character who opposes the protagonist/prevents main character from achieving goals. The cause of the conflict, and doesn't have to be tangible or human.
Person vs. Person in Hoot Dana bullies Roy on the bus, and in the closet, and in general.
Person vs. Self in Hoot Roy has trouble deciding between right and wrong: like when Dana is strangling him(should I fight back?) or when choosing to help Mullet Fingers or not.
Person vs. Nature in Hoot Roy(standing in for the owls) vs MP's (Curly, Chuck)
Person vs. Society in Hoot Roy accuses MP's of breaking the law
